So I’m here, in an island far from home. Human nature starts to make itself present. Mathematics is just a work or an occupation, just as any other could be; almost but not quite. It has its rewards in the simple fact of performing it. But doesn’t any occupation offer the same? The city is out there, far from La Trobe University, an hour by tram. These days I haven’t work much. Internet connection can become an addiction to the point of leaving you in oblivion. Once you are floating it seems like there is nowhere to go. But it’s not that bad, just getting used to the work of a scientist, of a researcher. I think I’m getting to know what I want: dissipative systems over conservative; chaos over linearity; biology over physics; analysis and equations over algebra and computers. One more week for Reinout, my supervisor, to arrive.
Reflections on mathematical research towards a doctorate of philosophy.
